The pc audit took up most of my time as I had to go round the whole of the site and record what computer equipment needed replacing, put the information into a spread sheet and have a meeting with my supervisor to determine what equipment to order, also I completed the user testing of the intelligent white boards this was done by setting up the two different types of white board in our meeting rooms and inviting the team leaders from other departments for a demonstration and basic Q&A once this was done they filled out a comments form and handed back to me from this information I was able to recommend an intelligent white board to my supervisor. The next step was to get quotes for chosen intelligent white board and computer equipment and get approval to purchase them once this was done the order was placed.
Next month is going to be a busy month as we are scheduled to move into our new building in January so a lot of my time will be preparing for the move and making sure everything goes smoothly.

Microsoft project training, this was a 2 day training course in how to use Microsoft project, and a general how to manage projects properly. This was a very useful course as it helped me understand how to set up a project and set in key dates so that you can track your project and its progress as well as report on how well you the project is doing.
My work this month has been to carry on with the two projects Network overview portal and ISO Project this has mainly been creating documents and going to meetings to get all the information I need to set the projects up correctly.
My new project this month is to complete a PC Audit of the whole site and spec new equipment to replace the old Monitors and PC’s this is part of a much bigger new build project which MBHPE have built a new Building to consolidate staff and manufacturing equipment into one site rather than many different locations. I will be working on this project closely with the project team and implement new hardware and software to the building such as security access doors with swipe cards, the network for the new building installing new switches and looking into the Audio Visual equipment for our new restaurant.

This month I have been giving a new project the network overview portal, this project is to audit the current Data Centre collect and consolidate network information such as IP address, server name & maintenance contract and create an interactive area to display live network information. The start of this project I collected all the relevant data and stored it in an excel spreadsheet making the spreadsheet interactive with a little code, collecting the information is time consuming so this will be an ongoing project, once completed I can start looking at how to display all the live information in one easy to use area.
I am still going through the iso security project at the moment I have just managed to set the project up in a Microsoft project plan and have some meetings with the iT Director to organise what can be done. This is still an ongoing project and takes a low priority as it does not need to be completed when I am here my main responsibility is to set the project up so someone else can come in and take over it easily.
15 – 17 September 2008 – ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) this was a 3 days training course with an exam at the end of it, I completed the training course and passed the exam with 85%

I was given a task by Gareth to amend the log on script so that when people log on, it will check what operating system they have, if they have windows 2000 it will write the output to a text file so these computers can be tracked down and replaced. As I had never used kixtart I began by reading what the program did and how to use it then writing basic programs to test, once I was confident I could use the program I set about writing the kixtart file and tested it using a virtual machine, the task turned out to be fairly easy and I gave the file to Gareth and implemented it into the current log on script job done!
The phone list was a time filler, which I used excel to create the list with a search button and a little code so that it would find peoples names.
ISO security project is the results of an external security auditor coming into the business and checking all areas of the business for security compliance and what needs improving, my job on this is to set out the project plan with the audits recommendations for improvement and start the ball rolling. This will be a large project spanning over two years and as I wont be here for two years my main responsibility is to get the project set up correctly so someone else can easily take over from me.

The start of my placement has been to familiarise myself with the company’s policies and procedures as well as the facilities I will be using whilst on my 12 month placement.
My first week at MBHPE I started in the service desk, this was because the person I was supposed to be working with in projects was off sick, as this is not my permanent role I have only been helping a contractor with general service desk duties, this work has been to move the hr departments computers to a new location due to a refurbishment in there old building, set up/fix printers, patch networks and complete routine tasks.

The next few weeks I started my role working in the projects department, this was pretty slow to start off with as I was just reading about how to complete company forms and procedures to follow when completing a project, once the boring bits were over I started to get some work my first task in projects was to test an engine database that the development department had created and create a user manual as well as make suggestions to improve the program. The actual testing of the database was fine but as it was a large program creating the user manual was long and tedious.
My new targets for next month is to create a log on script to determine what operating system a computer has and output the computers host name and user name to a text file, I have also been given a new project to start which is an ISO Security project. This will be to improve the company’s overall security ranging from awareness to purchasing new hardware and software firewalls/servers etc…
